Is Anybody Out There?

This page is dedicated to all of my blog posts for the anthology Is Anybody Out There? which I co-edited with Nick Gevers, published by Daw Books on June 1, 2010. So, if you are new to More Red Ink and wish to read all that I've posted on Is Anybody Out There? -- including six of the stories from the anthology -- then this is where you need to begin.

Is Anybody Out There? blog history...

  • The Fermi Paradox
Posted March 18, 2009: This entry details the genesis of the anthology, whose theme is based on the Fermi Paradox. My brief introduction pertains to an article by SF author and scientist Geoffrey A. Landis in the Journal of the British Interplanetary Society.
  • The Fermi Paradox Redux: Is Anybody Out There?
Posted December 16, 2009: Lists the final contents of the anthology. I begin with a brief discussion of an article entitled "The Chance of Finding Aliens" by Govert Schilling and Alan M. MacRobert in Sky & Telescope magazine; the article deals with the Drake equation.
  • Is Anybody Out There? -- Revealed
Posted March 13, 2010: A look at the Daw Books cover for the anthology, including the back cover text. The entry opens with a video by noted physicist Freeman Dyson, speaking on the search for life in the outer Solar System. On the Dyson page I found a broken link to an essay by Dr. Gregory L. Matloff: "The Reenchantment of the Solar System: A Proposed Search for Local ET's," published in 1998, which I just had to track down via the Internet Archives.
  • Is Anybody Out There? -- eARC Giveaway
Posted April 15, 2010: I ran a "giveaway" for the eARC of the anthology. I opened with a brief discussion of the new nonfiction book The Eerie Silence: Are We Alone in the Universe? by Paul Davies, which led to an interview with Davies on Failure Magazine entitled "SETI at 50."
  • Is Anybody Out There? -- First Review
Posted May 15, 2010: The first review in its entirety by Gardner Dozois in the May issue of Locus. I begin with an article by noted British theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking in the April 25 edition of the UK's Sunday Times Online in which he tells us to beware of aliens.
  • "Permanent Fatal Errors" by Jay Lake (Part 1 of 4)
Posted May 24, 2010: From the anthology, Jay Lake's story serialized in four parts. I chat about first meeting Jay in 2005 at BayCon, when he was Author Guest of Honr; and Jay provides some thoughts on his story.
  • "The Dark Man" by Kristine Kathryn Rusch (Part 1 of 3)
Posted June 7, 2010: From the anthology, Kristine Kathryn Rusch's story serialized in three parts. I talk about subscribing to Pulphouse: The Hardback Magazine, and then shortly thereafter meeting Kris and Dean Wesley Smith at the 1989 Seattle World Fantasy Convention; I later acquired and edited Kris's short story collection Stories for an Enchanted Afternoon. Kris also shares her thoughts on the story.
  • "Where Two or Three" by Sheila Finch (Part 1 of 3)
Posted June 14, 2010: From the anthology, Sheila Finch's story serialized in three parts. In 2003, I edited/copyedited Sheila's novel Reading the Bones, and then we later met at the book's launch party (also Tachyon Publications' eighth anniversary party). Sheila also provides her thoughts on the story.
  • "Residue" by Michael Arsenault
Posted June 23, 2010: From the anthology, Michael Arsenault's story in its entirety (no serialization, by request of the author). Michael was yet another contributor to my Witpunk anthology (Four Walls Eight Windows, 2003), which is how we originally met, virtually speaking that is. Michael shares a personal experience that provided the genesis for "Residue."
